B.G.S. and B.U.S. grads—Are you ready for May 2019 commencement?

This year’s commencement activities will be held on Saturday, May 11th. December 2018 graduates are invited to participate in May commencement along with applicants for May 2019 and August 2019 graduation. If you plan to graduate (i.e., complete all requirements for your degree) in May or August, make sure that you have completed the application process below. Even if you do not intend to participate in the commencement activities, you must apply for graduation in order to have your degree conferred.

B.G.S. and B.U.S. students with remaining course work—The following 2 forms must be submitted:

  1. Letter of Intent to Graduate (available on our website.) If you submitted one of these letters for a past semester but did not complete your degree, you must submit a new one to the Office of General Studies
  2. Online Diploma application

For currently enrolled students: Our office will authorize eligible participants to complete the online diploma application around mid-February. When authorized, you will receive an automated e-mail notifying you that you need to log into your MyOleMiss to complete the application. This is what gets you on the official list for graduation and must be submitted no later than March 4thin order for your name to appear in the commencement program.

Note for students who are taking their final course through another institution, through iStudy, or 2019 Winter Intersession: You will not be able to submit an online diploma application. Our Sr. Records Coordinator will send you a paper application to complete and submit back to us through e-mail. If you have questions, please contact Susan Morton at skmorton@olemiss.edu.

Bachelor of University Studies students who had no additional course work to complete for their degree: We e-mailed you a combined Letter of Intent to Graduate and Diploma Application form to submit to us, and will submit the diploma application on your behalf to the Office of the Registrar.

Students who received their diplomas as December 2018 graduates will automatically be invited to participate in the commencement ceremony without any additional paperwork needed.

There are TWO CEREMONIES in which graduates are invited to participate on May 11th:

Campus-wide morning convocation—This takes place in The Grove (time for this year has not yet been announced, but typically begins @ 9:00 a.m.). B.G.S. and B.U.S. graduates will have a general designated seating area for General Studies. Staff of the Office of the Registrar will be present to help graduates find their seating area. In case of rain, the morning convocation will be moved to an inside venue and will begin at 9:30, and graduates will sit with their families.

General Studies individual commencement ceremony—This ceremony takes place in the Manning Center (indoor football practice facility) at 3:00 p.m. This is the ceremony on which students’ individual names will be called and you will cross the stage and receive your diploma cover and have a photo taken with the Dean of General Studies. We are excited that this will be our first ceremony to include graduates of both of our degree programs—the Bachelor of General Studies and the Bachelor of University Studies. There is no limit on the number of guests you can invite to this ceremony, so we do not issue tickets for your guests.

Mailing of Diplomas

Please note that at commencement, you will receive a diploma cover, not your actual diploma. Students who graduated the previous December will have already been mailed their diplomas. Grades for May graduates will not become available until AFTER the May commencement ceremony, at which time our office has 30 days to begin checking final grades and compiling our list of students who earned their degrees by the end of the spring semester. May diplomas are typically mailed to students around mid-July. We will begin checking grades for August applicants after August intersession and have 30 days to compile our final list of August degrees to be conferred. August graduates can usually expect to receive their diplomas in the mail by mid-October.
